Kangemi, like other informal settlements, is an incredibly crowded, unplanned area of tin (mabati) shacks, stretching as far as the eye can see. With a population at over 100,000 (Kenya Census, 2019), Kangemi has only 3 primary state schools with 1,500-2,500 children in each school. It has two thin, worn tarmac roads. There are almost no services (water, sewage, wastes disposal services, electricity, street lighting, internet cables, government schools, children’s playgrounds,).
APBET informal schools mushroomed because the state schools offering tuition free primary education could not meet demand; and poor children could not attend these schools, due to the extra levies charged or the distance from home. Therefore, KRC has stepped in, to supplement the schooling of the children and support their families.
KRC is the only community centre in the entire Kangemi area which offers such a range of education and training programs and a public library, supplemented by digital services and internet access.
But KRC could reach more children and youth with more activities: arts programs, basic fitness classes, expanded book clubs, intensive and varied computer access/use for the teachers and the children; a data collection services and training unit for the youth (i.a. citizenship journalism); youth coaching and young women’s income generating skills training are among the new positively impacting projects KRC has identified to achieve its mission.
Kangemi Resource Centre is a licensed entity and accountable to the Kenyan NGO Board and undergoes annual audits. Projects are exclusively disseminated in the Kangemi informal settlement through the Centre that belongs to the NGO which is governed by an official Board of 3 members.
KRC is a structured institution that has its own organizational and administrative structure and an accounting system. It currently has a permanent staff of 11 employees, 10 for KRC and 1 for the Mama Africa Women Project, including a CEO, a financial administrator, 5 project officers (library, IT, Water project, and Women workshop), and 3 supporting and security staff, who are under renewable annual contracts.
Kangemi Resource Centre has become a well-established institution in the community and a trusted partner in the local network of organisations.
